WOODEN TIONS

The friendly character of the Tió is represented as a wooden log with a smiling face drawn on it. Like the Caganer, he wears the typical barretina (the traditional Catalan hat) and is usually half-covered with a plaid blanket. Legend has it that, in December, if you welcome a Tió into your home, the youngest members of your household must be responsible for providing him with food and drink every day. Until, on the night of December 24th, if you have properly cared for him, he will defecate under his blanket, delivering gifts for the whole family when you hit him with a stick to the rhythm of a famous traditional song. The Tió symbolizes magic and hope, as he is the character who, typically in Catalonia, brings the most desired gifts on Christmas Eve.
