Montserrat Caballé was the Superba , just as Maria Callas was the Divina or Joan Sutherland the Stupenda . Without exaggeration, she was one of the greatest sopranos and opera singers of the 20th century. A daughter of Barcelona and Catalan to the core, Caballé wielded her voice with complete mastery and commanded the stage thanks to her technical virtuosity and interpretive gifts. Would it be presumptuous to label her the “last Catalan diva”? Perhaps not: there aren't many who have shared the stage with Freddie Mercury and who bear an undeniable—albeit anachronistic—resemblance to Bianca Castafiore, the opera singer who frequently appears in Tintin comics.
