Caganer Catalan peasant reaper

The reaper is one of the traditional icons of Catalan culture, represented by a farmer wielding a sickle. Its origins lie in the Catalan Revolt (Guerra dels Segadors), an uprising sparked by the heavy expenses of the Thirty Years' War in Catalonia. The Catalan national anthem, 'Els Segadors', is also linked to this figure and is a call to defend the freedom of the land, written by Emili Guanyavents and set to music by Francesc Alió.
